CNC machining cost in India: what decides the price of your part

Why two workshops quote very different prices for the same part, and how to bring your cost down.

There is no single rate per part

Buyers often ask what CNC machining costs per piece. The honest answer is that it depends on the part. A workshop works out a price from the machine time, the material, the setup and the checking your part needs, so the same drawing can be cheap at 500 pieces and expensive at 5.

What the price is made of

  • Machine time: how long the part spends on the machine. Deep pockets, many features and hard materials take longer.
  • Machine type: a simple turned part on a CNC lathe usually costs less per hour than a part that needs a VMC or a 4- or 5-axis machine.
  • Setup and programming: writing the program, making fixtures and setting the tools. This is spread over the quantity, which is why small batches cost more per piece.
  • Material: the price of the bar or block, and how much of it is cut away as chips.
  • Tolerances and finish: tight tolerances and fine finishes mean slower cuts, more checking and sometimes grinding.
  • Extra work: heat treatment, plating or coating, deburring, inspection reports and packing.

How to get a lower price without losing quality

  • Give the real quantity and the expected repeat orders. Workshops price a steady job better than a one-off.
  • Keep tight tolerances only on the features that fit or seal, and use a general tolerance for the rest.
  • Use standard materials and sizes that are easy to buy in your city.
  • Avoid very deep, narrow pockets and sharp inside corners where a rounded corner would do.
  • Send a clear drawing, or a 3D file if you have one, so the workshop does not add a margin for guesswork.

Compare quotations on the same basis

When quotations differ a lot, check what each includes: material, finishing, inspection, packing and delivery. Ask each workshop how they plan to make the part. A workshop that has made similar parts on the right machine is often both cheaper and more reliable.
