How it is worked out
- Adding GST: tax = amount × rate ÷ 100; total = amount + tax.
- Removing GST: taxable value = amount ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100); tax = amount − taxable value.
- Within one state the tax is split equally into CGST and SGST; between states it is all IGST.
Questions
- How do I remove 18% GST from a total?
- Divide by 1.18. For ₹1,180 the taxable value is ₹1,000 and the GST is ₹180.
- When is it IGST instead of CGST and SGST?
- When the supplier and the place of supply are in different states. Within the same state it is CGST plus SGST, each half the rate.
- Which GST rate applies to my product or service?
- It depends on its HSN or SAC code and changes from time to time. Check the current rate notified by the GST Council, or ask your accountant.
