Taper and sine bar calculator

Included angle, compound slide setting and taper ratio from the diameters and length, or slip gauges for a sine bar.

Compound slide setting (half angle)
1.4321°
Included angle
2.8642°
Taper ratio
1 : 20
Taper per mm
0.05 mm

How it is worked out

  • Half angle = arctan((D − d) ÷ (2 × L)); the compound slide is set to the half angle.
  • Taper ratio = 1 : L ÷ (D − d).
  • Sine bar: slip gauge height = sine bar length × sin(angle).

Questions

What angle do I set the compound slide to?
The half angle (half the included angle), because the slide cuts one side of the taper.
What does a 1:20 taper mean?
The diameter changes by 1 mm (0.0394 inch) over every 20 mm (0.787 inch) of length.
What slip gauges do I need for 30° on a 100 mm sine bar?
100 × sin 30° = 50.0000 mm (1.97 inch).
