Laser cutting
Also called: laser cutting job work, CNC laser cutting services, sheet metal laser cutting, fibre laser cutting, profile cutting
Laser cutting job work cuts shapes from sheet and plate with a CNC fibre laser, straight from your drawing file, to about ±0.1 mm. It suits mild steel, stainless steel, aluminium and brass parts from one piece to large batches, with no tooling cost.
Quick facts
- Machine
- Fibre laser cutting machine
- Typical accuracy
- About ±0.1 mm
- Materials
- Mild steel, stainless steel, aluminium, brass, copper, galvanised sheet
- Usually priced
- Per metre of cut and per pierce, per piece, or per kg
- Input
- DXF or DWG at full scale
- Tooling
- None: changes cost nothing but a new file
How it is priced
- Cut length and number of pierces (holes and starts) drive the machine time
- Thicker material cuts more slowly
- Material cost, often with the sheet's waste shared across the nest
- Nitrogen cutting for clean stainless and aluminium edges costs more than oxygen
- Some shops in Gujarat quote mild steel work per kg, which suits simple parts; complex parts with many holes are better priced per piece
Design tips
- Make holes at least about the sheet thickness in diameter for clean cuts
- Keep small features and slots no narrower than about the sheet thickness
- Leave bend reliefs where parts will be bent afterwards
- Send closed, clean outlines without overlapping lines or text that is not meant to be cut
- Say which parts need deburring or a clean (nitrogen) edge
What to send
- DXF or DWG at full scale (1:1)
- Material grade and thickness
- Quantity of each part
- Whether you supply the sheet
- Next steps if any: bending, welding, painting

Questions
- How is laser cutting priced?
- By machine time (cut length, number of holes, thickness) plus material; some shops quote simple mild steel parts per kg. Complex parts are fairer to price per piece.
- What is the accuracy of laser cutting?
- About ±0.1 mm on most sheet work; thicker plate is a little less accurate.
- Can I get laser-cut parts bent too?
- Yes. Many laser cutting shops also have press brakes. Send the drawing with bend lines and the 3D model if you have one.
