Band saw machine

Also called: bandsaw, metal band saw, horizontal band saw, automatic band saw, bar cutting machine

A band saw cuts metal with a continuous toothed blade running around two wheels. In workshops it is mainly used to cut bars, pipes and sections to length before machining or fabrication. Automatic band saws feed the bar and cut many pieces to the same length without an operator.

Quick facts

Types
Horizontal (cut-off), vertical (contour), automatic, double-column
Capacity
Given as max round and rectangular size, e.g. Ø300 mm (11.81 inch)
Length accuracy
About ±0.2–0.5 mm (±0.0079–0.0197 inch) on automatic saws
Blades
Bi-metal for most steels; carbide for hard or large work
Kerf
About 1–2 mm (0.0394–0.0787 inch)
Coolant
Used for steel to protect the blade

Choosing a blade

  • More teeth per inch for thin walls and small sections; fewer for large solids
  • Bi-metal (M42) blades for general steels and stainless
  • Carbide blades for hard steels, nickel alloys and high production
  • Correct speed and feed matter more than blade price

Typical work

  • Cutting bar stock to length for CNC turning
  • Cutting pipes, angles, channels and beams for fabrication
  • Cutting blocks from large rounds and flats
  • Contour cutting (vertical saw)

Limits

  • Cut faces need facing or machining for accurate work
  • Very hard material wears blades quickly
  • Bundle cutting needs firm clamping to stay square

Questions

Band saw or circular saw for bar cutting?
Circular (cold) saws cut faster and with a better finish on smaller sizes in high production; band saws handle large diameters and bundles with less waste and lower blade cost.
What capacity band saw do I need?
Choose by the largest round and rectangular section you cut, with some margin. A 250–300 mm (9.84–11.81 inch) horizontal band saw covers most general workshop bar cutting.

The figures on this page are typical values for guidance, written by Diemeco from standard engineering practice. They are not a specification: confirm grades and properties with the relevant standard or the supplier's mill test certificate, and tolerances with your workshop. Last checked 15 October 2026.
