SS310 stainless steel

Also called: SS 310, 310S, AISI 310, 1.4845, heat resistant stainless steel, SS310S

SS310 is an austenitic stainless steel with about 25% chromium and 20% nickel, made to resist oxidation at high temperatures. It stays strong and scale-resistant up to about 1100 °C in air, so it is used for furnace parts, heat treatment fixtures, burners and kiln parts.

Quick facts

Type
Austenitic heat-resistant stainless steel
Main alloys
About 24–26% chromium, 19–22% nickel
Service temperature
Up to about 1100 °C in air (continuous)
Hardening
Not hardenable by heat treatment
Magnetic
No (annealed)
310S
Low-carbon version, better for welding

Equivalent grades

StandardGrade
AISI / ASTM310, 310S
EN1.4845 (X8CrNi25-21)
UNSS31000, S31008

Equivalents are close, not identical. Name the grade and standard on the drawing.

Typical chemical composition

Element%
Chromium (Cr)About 24–26
Nickel (Ni)About 19–22
Carbon (C)Up to 0.25 (310), up to 0.08 (310S)
Manganese (Mn)Up to about 2
Silicon (Si)Up to about 1.5

Values are typical. The exact limits depend on the standard and supplier; ask for the mill test certificate when it matters.

Typical uses

  • Furnace parts, muffles, retorts and conveyor belts
  • Heat treatment trays, baskets and fixtures
  • Burner nozzles and kiln parts
  • Heat exchangers and boiler parts

Working with it

  • Machines like 304 but work-hardens; use sharp tools and steady feeds
  • Weldable; 310S or matching filler is used
  • Costs more than 304 and 316 because of the high nickel

Questions

What temperature can SS310 take?
About 1100 °C in continuous service in air, a little higher for short periods. That is much more than 304 or 316, which scale above about 850–900 °C.
Is SS310 better than SS316 for corrosion?
Not in general. 316 has molybdenum and resists chlorides and many chemicals better at normal temperatures. 310 is chosen for heat and oxidation resistance.
Is SS310 magnetic?
No, not in the annealed condition. Like 304 it may become slightly magnetic after heavy cold working.

The figures on this page are typical values for guidance, written by Diemeco from standard engineering practice. They are not a specification: confirm grades and properties with the relevant standard or the supplier's mill test certificate, and tolerances with your workshop. Last checked 15 October 2026.
