Deburring removes the sharp edges and small slivers of metal (burrs) left by machining, punching, cutting and drilling. Burrs can cut hands, stop parts fitting, damage seals and break off inside machines. Small parts are usually deburred in batches in vibratory or barrel machines with abrasive media; larger or delicate parts are deburred by hand or with brushes.
Quick facts
- Main methods
- Hand tools, vibratory finishing, barrel tumbling, brush, thermal, electrochemical
- Typical parts
- Machined, pressed, laser cut and cast parts
- Edge result
- Sharp edge broken, small radius, smoother surface
- Batch size
- From a few to thousands of parts
- Size change
- Very small with correct media
- Usually priced
- Per kg or per part
Which method for which part
| Method | Best for | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Hand deburring | Large parts, few pieces, internal edges | Labour cost per part |
| Vibratory finishing | Small and medium parts in batches | Even results, gentle |
| Barrel tumbling | Small sturdy parts in big batches | Faster, harsher |
| Brush deburring | Laser cut and punched sheet | Both sides at once on machines |
What to tell the workshop
- Material and part size
- Which edges matter and the edge radius allowed
- Faces or threads that must not be touched
- Surface finish wanted after deburring
- Quantity and how parts must be packed so they do not knock each other
Good to know
- Parts can be dried and rust-protected right after wet deburring
- Ceramic media cuts faster; plastic media is gentler on soft metals
- Cross holes and internal burrs may need special tools or thermal deburring

Questions
- Why do machined parts need deburring?
- Burrs are sharp, can stop parts fitting or sealing, and can break off inside an assembly. Deburring makes parts safe and reliable.
- Does vibratory deburring change dimensions?
- Only very slightly when the right media and time are used. Close-tolerance faces can be protected or checked after.
- Can deburring and polishing be done together?
- Often yes: a cutting stage removes burrs, then a finer media stage brightens the surface.
