Aluminium 2024 is a high-strength aluminium-copper alloy known for excellent fatigue resistance. It is used for aircraft structures, fittings, high-strength fasteners and machined parts that see repeated loads. It machines well but resists corrosion poorly, so parts are usually anodised, painted or clad, and it is not suited to welding.

Questions
- Why is 2024 used in aircraft?
- It combines high strength with very good fatigue resistance, important for parts that flex in every flight.
- Can 2024 be anodised?
- Yes, though the finish is less bright than on 6061; hard anodising is also possible.
- 2024 or 2014?
- 2014 is stronger and preferred for forgings; 2024 has better fatigue resistance and is common as plate and sheet.
The figures on this page are typical values for guidance, written by Diemeco from standard engineering practice. They are not a specification: confirm grades and properties with the relevant standard or the supplier's mill test certificate, and tolerances with your workshop. Last checked 23 October 2026.
