HR sheet (IS 1079)

Also called: HR sheet, hot rolled sheet, HRC coil, IS 1079, HRPO, hot rolled pickled and oiled, HR plate

HR sheet is steel sheet made by rolling hot, made in India to IS 1079. It is cheaper than cold rolled (CRCA) sheet but has a dark scaled surface and looser thickness tolerance. Pickled and oiled sheet (HRPO) has the scale removed for painting and pressing. HR sheet is used for chassis parts, brackets, tanks, structures and fabricated parts, usually from about 1.6 mm (0.0630 inch) thick upward.

Questions

Why is HR sheet cheaper than CRCA?
It skips cold rolling and annealing, so it costs less but has a rougher surface and looser thickness.
Can HR sheet be powder coated?
Yes, after the scale is removed by shot blasting or pickling, or by using HRPO.
Is HR plate the same as IS 2062?
Structural plate is usually bought to IS 2062; IS 1079 covers hot rolled sheet and strip for forming.

They are not a specification: confirm grades and properties with the relevant standard or the supplier's mill test certificate, and tolerances with your workshop. Last checked 29 October 2026.
