Aluminium 5052 is a magnesium-alloyed aluminium (about 2.5% Mg) with excellent corrosion resistance, good strength for a non-heat-treatable alloy, and very good formability. It is a favourite for bent sheet-metal parts, tanks, enclosures and marine parts.
Quick facts
- Type
- Non-heat-treatable wrought aluminium (5000 series)
- Main alloy
- About 2.2–2.8% magnesium
- Common temper
- H32 (strain hardened and stabilised)
- Strength (H32)
- Tensile about 210–260 MPa
- Corrosion resistance
- Excellent, including sea water
- Weldability
- Very good (TIG / MIG)
Equivalent grades
| Standard | Grade |
|---|---|
| AA / ASTM | 5052 |
| EN | EN AW-5052, AlMg2.5 |
| IS 737 | 52000 |
5052 or 6061?
- 5052: better corrosion resistance and much better for bending sheet; cannot be heat treated
- 6061: stronger after heat treatment (T6), better for machined parts, less suitable for tight bends
Typical uses
- Sheet-metal enclosures, panels and brackets
- Fuel and water tanks
- Marine and boat parts
- Pressure vessels and truck bodies
- Chequered (tread) plate

Questions
- Can 5052 aluminium be heat treated?
- No. Its strength comes from magnesium and cold working (tempers like H32), not from heat treatment.
- Is 5052 good for bending?
- Yes, it is one of the best aluminium alloys for bending and forming sheet without cracking.
- Can 5052 be anodised?
- Yes, it anodises well, though colours can look slightly different from 6000-series alloys.
