Aluminium 1100 is commercially pure aluminium with at least 99.0% aluminium. It is soft, very easy to form and spin, conducts heat and electricity well, and resists corrosion. It is weak compared with alloys, so it is used for heat exchanger fins, utensils, spun parts, reflectors, nameplates and chemical equipment rather than load-bearing parts.
Quick facts
- Aluminium content
- 99.0% min
- Tensile strength
- About 75–105 MPa (O); about 110–145 MPa (H14)
- Formability
- Excellent: deep drawing, spinning, bending
- Corrosion
- Very good
- Hardening
- Only by cold work (H tempers), not by heat treatment
- Weldability
- Excellent
Equivalent grades
| Standard | Grade |
|---|---|
| AA (USA) | 1100 |
| EN | EN AW-1100 (Al99.0Cu) |
| IS 737 | 19000 (close) |
| UNS | A91100 |
Equivalents are close, not identical. Name the grade and standard on the drawing.
Common tempers
| Temper | Condition | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| O | Fully soft (annealed) | Deep drawing, spinning |
| H12 / H14 | Quarter / half hard | Sheet work, panels, fins |
| H16 / H18 | Three-quarter / full hard | Stiffer flat parts, nameplates |
Values are typical. The exact limits depend on the standard and supplier; ask for the mill test certificate when it matters.
Typical uses
- Heat exchanger and AC fins
- Cooking utensils and spun vessels
- Reflectors and lighting parts
- Nameplates and decorative trim
- Chemical and food handling equipment

Questions
- Is aluminium 1100 the same as pure aluminium?
- It is commercially pure: at least 99.0% aluminium, with small amounts of copper, iron and silicon. Grades such as 1050 and 1070 are purer still.
- Can aluminium 1100 be hardened?
- Only by cold work, such as rolling (H tempers). It cannot be hardened by heat treatment like 6061 or 7075.
- 1100 or 5052 for sheet metal parts?
- 1100 forms more easily and costs less, but is soft and weak. 5052 is about twice as strong, still bends well and resists sea water, so it suits enclosures and brackets.
The figures on this page are typical values for guidance, written by Diemeco from standard engineering practice. They are not a specification: confirm grades and properties with the relevant standard or the supplier's mill test certificate, and tolerances with your workshop. Last checked 18 October 2026.
